Help Bridges Raise $25,000
My name is Rich Marcello, and I’m the author of the novel The Beauty of the Fall. About two years ago, I met Dawn Reams, who as many of you know, is the selfless and tireless leader of Bridges. At the time, I was in the early stages of writing my third novel, The Beauty of the Fall, which in part deals with domestic violence, and I needed to discuss my ideas with an expert in the field. Dawn generously offered me her time.
I learned a great deal about domestic and sexual violence through my conversations with Dawn. While Bridges works with men, women, and children, here are a few of the facts about female victims that have stuck with me.
Every ninety seconds, somewhere in America, someone is sexually assaulted.
Less than half of domestic violence incidents are reported to police.
Only six percent of rapists will ever spend a day in jail; fifteen out of sixteen will walk free.
Approximately 1,270,000 women are raped each year in the United States.
Thirty percent of victims are less than seventeen years old.
Victims of domestic violence are three times more likely to suffer from depression, six times more likely to suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, fourteen times more likely to abuse alcohol, twenty-six times more likely to abuse drugs, and four times more likely to contemplate suicide.
And, as I mentioned, these are just a few of the facts.
When I finished The Beauty of the Fall, I was so taken by the experience that I wanted to do more. That’s why I jumped at the opportunity to join the Bridges Board of Directors for a time and why I'm asking for your help.

I sincerely hope you can help us. The famous author, George Saunders, once said, “to the extent that you can, err in the direction of kindness.” I agree with him, and certainly any donation to any organization like Bridges is, among other things, an act of kindness. In Bridges’ case, your donation will enable victims to survive, to start again, and ultimately to bloom into the souls they were meant to be.
Thank you,
Rich Marcello
